4. Fish shelters

Theme: Ecology and morphology

  • Restore an ecologically complex structure to the channels
  • Improve riverine and riparian habitat

Project description

This project will provide clean areas for all fish to shelter in during periods of excessive high water.

The River Lea is a historic fishery, mentioned in Isaak Walton's famous book 'The Compleat Angler'.To ensure the continuation of a healthy fishery, it is important to ensure that fish are not damaged, killed or swept downstream during flood events.  This project will clean out and deepen certain areas out of the main flow, which will act as refuge areas in high flows.  Eventually, this will reduce the need to stock small fish by making the fish populations self-sustaining.
