1. Hartham Common rivers hub

Themes: Water Quality, Habitats and Wildlife; People

Objectives:

  • That whatever the flow level, the river and its associated habitats, including banks and floodplains, are managed to support chalk stream species
  • To increase the public's appreciation of the unique chalk stream environment and their participation in its conservation

Project description

This project aims to capitalise on the key strategic location of Hartham Common as a public park within the county town of Hertford, with excellent public accessibility to the Beane and Mimram confluence. The project will utilise the site’s facilities to encourage exploration of the wider catchment, and to develop opportunities for community involvement and learning.

The project will provide interpretation panels containing wildlife information, and access routes into the wider catchment.

Infrastructure to enable physical access to the catchment will be developed, including an easy access surfaced footpath along a small part of the River Beane, to link with existing surfaced footpaths and car parks on Hartham Common.

The project will also include the establishment of additional grazing infrastructure to increase the area of floodplain grazing meadow.
