19. Reed Fen Habitat Creation at Batford Springs

Themes: Ecology and management; Public engagement

Objective:

  • Increase the amount and quality of in-channel, bankside and floodplain habitat

Project description

Creation of priority reed-fen habitat at Batford Spring Nature Reserve

This project has provided a new habitat to Batford Springs Nature reserve by creating a reed-fen in the flood plain beside the River Lea.

Batford Springs is host to a wide range of habitats; the river and chalk streams, wet meadows, wet woodland, reed beds and unimproved grassland. The creation of a reed-fen will provide a new habitat to wading birds and wetland invertebrates which will thrive in a marshy fen area.
